Diamond Clarity Explained

When choosing a diamond—especially for something as personal as an engagement ring—most people focus on sparkle, size, or colour. But one of the most important and misunderstood characteristics is clarity.

In this guide, we’ll explain what diamond clarity is, how it’s graded, what types of inclusions exist, and how to choose the best clarity grade without overpaying.

What Is Diamond Clarity?

Clarity refers to the presence of internal features (inclusions) and external features (blemishes) inside or on the surface of a diamond. These features form naturally in mined diamonds, or during the growth process in lab grown diamonds.

The fewer and smaller these flaws, the higher the clarity grade—and typically, the more valuable the stone.

However, most inclusions are microscopic and have little or no impact on how a diamond looks to the naked eye.

The Diamond Clarity Scale (GIA Standard)

Diamond clarity is graded by expert gemmologists under 10x magnification using a globally standardised scale developed by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA).

Grade Description What You’ll See
FL (Flawless) No inclusions or blemishes Perfect under magnification
IF (Internally Flawless) No internal inclusions May have surface blemishes
VVS1–VVS2 (Very Very Slightly Included) Inclusions extremely difficult to see Invisible to naked eye
VS1–VS2 (Very Slightly Included) Minor inclusions, difficult to see Eye-clean in most lighting
SI1–SI2 (Slightly Included) Inclusions visible under magnification Some may be visible unaided
I1–I3 (Included) Obvious inclusions Visible to the eye, can affect durability

Types of Inclusions and Blemishes

Common features that affect clarity include:

Inclusions (internal)

  • Feathers – small cracks inside the diamond

  • Crystals or mineral spots – embedded in the diamond

  • Needles – thin, long inclusions

  • Clouds – groups of tiny crystals that reduce brilliance

  • Knots – inclusions that reach the surface

Blemishes (external)

  • Polish lines – from finishing process

  • Scratches – minor surface marks

  • Pits or nicks – tiny surface openings

Not all inclusions are visible or impactful. Some are hidden under prongs or near the girdle, where they don’t affect appearance or performance.

How Does Clarity Affect Appearance?

Surprisingly, clarity has less impact on visible beauty than many buyers assume. In fact, many diamonds graded as VS1, VS2, or even SI1 appear “eye-clean”, meaning you can’t see the flaws without magnification.

Inclusions only become a visual concern when:

  • They are dark and centrally located

  • They are large enough to affect transparency

  • You’re choosing a step-cut diamond (e.g. emerald or asscher) with large open facets

Lab Grown Diamonds and Clarity

Lab grown diamonds tend to have fewer and less visible inclusions than mined diamonds, due to the controlled nature of their creation.

  • CVD diamonds may show slight feathering or clouding

  • HPHT diamonds can occasionally have tiny metallic inclusions (invisible without a microscope)

At Diamond Lab, we offer IGI- or GIA-certified lab diamonds, most of which are graded VS1–VVS1—meaning they’re visually flawless to the naked eye.

Clarity vs Other Cs: How to Prioritise

If you’re working within a budget, clarity is often the easiest “C” to compromise on—especially if you want to prioritise size or cut.

Here’s how to approach it:

  • Go for VS1 or VS2 if you want peace of mind and an eye-clean look

  • SI1 is great value if you inspect it first or trust your jeweller

  • VVS1–FL grades are often reserved for collectors or luxury buyers seeking perfection

Tip: A well-cut diamond with lower clarity will still sparkle brilliantly—and many inclusions can be hidden under prongs.

How to Read Clarity on a Certificate

A certified diamond from IGI or GIA will include:

  • A clarity grade

  • A plot map showing inclusion type and location

  • A comments section with additional notes

  • Sometimes a laser inscription with the report number

We always recommend reviewing the clarity diagram to understand what kind of inclusions are present and where they sit in the diamond.

Final Thoughts: What Clarity Grade Is Right for You?

The best clarity grade is one that fits your budget, preferences, and setting. You don’t need perfection to have a beautiful diamond—many “slightly included” diamonds look stunning and save you thousands.

Focus on what’s visible, not just what’s printed on the report.
