Everything You Need to Know About Choosing the Perfect Wedding Band

Men’s Wedding Band FAQs

What is a men's wedding band?

A men's wedding band is a ring exchanged during a marriage ceremony and worn continuously thereafter as a symbol of marital commitment. Traditionally simpler in design than a women's wedding ring, the men's band typically focuses on metal, finish, width, and subtle detailing rather than diamonds or prominent stones. Men's wedding bands range from minimalist plain bands to richly detailed mixed metal designs, with the modern category significantly expanded over the past decade as men have moved beyond traditional plain gold bands toward more personalised designs.

What are the most popular men's wedding band styles?

The four most popular men's wedding band styles at VYOR are classic plain bands (smooth metal with polished or matte finish), comfort fit bands (slightly rounded inner profile for everyday wear), two tone bands (combining two precious metal colours), and detailed bands with milgrain, hammered, or brushed textures. Diamond accented men's bands (with small diamonds set along a channel or pavé) have also grown rapidly in popularity, alongside mixed metal designs combining traditional precious metals with darker metals like tantalum or matte finishes.

How do I find the right wedding ring size?

We recommend using our ring size guide or visiting a jeweller to get professionally measured.

What width should a men's wedding band be?

Most men's wedding bands sit between 4 mm and 7 mm wide. Thinner bands (3 to 4 mm) read as more refined and contemporary. Standard bands (5 to 6 mm) are the most popular and suit most hand shapes and personal styles. Wider bands (7 to 8 mm) read as more substantial and traditional. The right width depends on hand size, finger length, personal style, and the visual presence the wearer wants in the ring. Our designer guides every client through width considerations during consultation.

What is a comfort fit men's wedding band?

A comfort fit band features a slightly rounded inner surface (rather than flat), allowing the ring to slide more smoothly over the knuckle and sit more comfortably on the finger during continuous wear. The comfort fit profile is especially recommended for wider bands (5 mm and above) and for clients who plan to wear the ring continuously without removing it. Comfort fit is the default inner profile on most VYOR men's wedding bands unless a flat fit is specifically requested.

What is the difference between platinum and white gold for men's bands?

Platinum is denser, more durable, and more naturally white than 18k white gold. Platinum maintains its colour over time without replating. 18k white gold has a slight warm undertone that is masked by rhodium replating, which is typically refreshed every few years. Platinum costs more than 18k white gold but offers superior longevity for daily wear. For men's wedding bands worn continuously over decades, platinum is the most premium choice; for clients seeking the same appearance at a lower cost, 18k white gold with periodic replating is an excellent alternative.

What finish options are available for men's wedding bands?

VYOR offers polished (high shine), matte (low sheen with soft texture), brushed (subtle linear texture), and hammered (visible textured surface) finishes on men's wedding bands. Polished is the most traditional and the most popular. Matte and brushed read as more contemporary and modern. Hammered produces a distinctive, custom looking band with visible craftsmanship texture. Combination finishes (polished centre with matte edges, or matte centre with polished edges) are also available on custom designs.

Can men's wedding bands include diamonds?

Yes. While men's wedding bands have traditionally been plain or detailed metal only, diamond accented men's bands have grown rapidly in popularity over the past decade. Common configurations include a single small diamond bezel set in the band, a row of small pavé diamonds along the centre or edge of the band, or channel set diamonds running along the band. VYOR creates diamond accented men's wedding bands using the same lab grown diamond quality standard as our engagement rings.

Can VYOR make a matching set for both partners?

Yes. Coordinated bridal sets (engagement ring, women's wedding ring, and men's wedding band designed to coordinate together) are one of our most requested services. Our designer works with both partners during consultation to ensure the three rings coordinate on metal, finish, and overall design language while reflecting each partner's individual style. The same three to five week production timeframe applies to coordinated sets.

A men's wedding band is the most worn piece of jewellery a man will ever own, exchanged during the marriage ceremony and worn continuously through every day of married life. At VYOR, every men's wedding band is custom designed in Perth by our designer, finished in Western Australia by our team of senior master jewellers, and made to suit the wearer's hand, lifestyle, and personal style.

Custom Men's Wedding Bands at VYOR

The modern men's wedding band has evolved significantly from the traditional plain gold band. While classic styles remain timeless and popular, today's grooms have access to a richly expanded category of designs: mixed metals, hammered and brushed finishes, channel set diamonds, two tone combinations, and bespoke custom configurations. At VYOR, every men's wedding band is custom made and tailored to the wearer.

Our men's wedding band collection spans classic plain bands, comfort fit and flat fit profiles, two tone designs, mixed metal bands, milgrain detailed bands, hammered and brushed textures, and diamond accented bands. Every design is available in 18k white gold, yellow gold, rose gold, or platinum, with widths from 3 mm to 8 mm and a range of finishes.

Designed by Our Designer

Our designer, Nikolett, directs every men's wedding band design in the studio. She works with each client on the style direction (classic versus modern, plain versus detailed), the width and profile, the metal and finish, and the integration with the partner's wedding ring for coordinated bridal sets.

For diamond featuring men's bands, our gemologist, Joseph, oversees the colour and clarity matching of the accent stones to meet the same VYOR quality standard (G colour and above, VS1 clarity and above) as our engagement ring accent stones. Read more about the founders on our About page.

How to Choose a Men's Wedding Band, A Designer's Guide

Men's wedding band design comes down to five decisions, walked through in every consultation at VYOR.

Width

3 to 4 mm for refined, contemporary slim profiles. 5 to 6 mm for standard, balanced presence (the most popular range). 7 to 8 mm for substantial, traditional bands. The right width depends on the wearer's hand size, finger length, and personal style.

Profile and fit

Comfort fit (rounded inner surface) for everyday wearable comfort, especially in wider bands. Flat fit (square inner surface) for a more traditional fit and slightly lower production cost. Domed or barrel profile (curved outer surface) for a soft, classical silhouette. Flat profile (straight outer surface) for a clean, contemporary look.

Metal

Platinum for maximum durability and natural white colour without replating. 18k white gold for similar appearance at lower cost (with periodic rhodium replating). 18k yellow gold for the classical wedding band aesthetic. 18k rose gold for a warm, distinctive look. Two tone combinations for contemporary character.

Finish

Polished (high shine, most traditional). Matte (low sheen, contemporary). Brushed (subtle texture, modern). Hammered (visible texture, custom looking). Combination finishes for deliberate visual contrast across the band.

Detail

Plain band for timeless minimalism. Milgrain edging for vintage character. Channel set diamonds for subtle sparkle. Pavé centre or edge for more pronounced diamond detail. Inlays, engravings, and bespoke detailing for fully custom designs.

These are the five decisions our designer walks through in every consultation.
