Radiant FAQs

What is a radiant cut diamond?

The radiant cut is a square or rectangular brilliant cut diamond with cropped corners, combining the geometric silhouette of emerald cut with the high light return of round brilliant. The cut was patented in 1977 by Henry Grossbard in New York and is one of the youngest major diamond cuts in production today. Radiant cut features 70 facets (more than the 58 of round brilliant), producing exceptional fire and scintillation. It is currently among the top six most popular engagement ring shapes worldwide and one of the fastest growing in Australia.

What is the difference between radiant cut and emerald cut?

The two cuts share the same rectangular shape and cropped corners, but differ fundamentally in faceting. Emerald cut is a step cut, with long, parallel rectangular facets producing a hall of mirrors light effect and lower overall brilliance. Radiant cut is a brilliant cut, with 70 small triangular and kite shaped facets producing intense scintillation and fire similar to round brilliant. The choice is aesthetic: emerald cut reads as architectural and restrained, radiant cut reads as architectural and brilliant.

What is the difference between radiant cut and princess cut?

Both are brilliant cut and both work in square or rectangular formats, but they differ in two important ways. First, radiant has cropped corners while princess has sharp square corners, making radiant more durable for everyday wear and less vulnerable to chipping. Second, radiant has 70 facets while princess has approximately 50 to 58 (varies by cutter), producing slightly more brilliance and fire in radiant. For clients drawn to a geometric square or rectangular shape, radiant offers a more durable and brilliant alternative to princess.

Why does radiant cut have more facets than other shapes?

The radiant cut was specifically designed to maximise brilliance in a rectangular shape. Henry Grossbard's original design featured 70 facets (compared to 58 in round brilliant and approximately 50 in princess) precisely because the rectangular outline of the stone could accommodate more reflective surfaces. The additional facets produce greater fire and scintillation per carat than any other rectangular shape, and the cut is widely considered one of the most successful diamond cuts patented in the 20th century.

What is the ideal length to width ratio for a radiant cut?

Radiant cut works in two distinct silhouettes: square radiant at 1.00 to 1.05 ratio, and rectangular radiant at 1.10 to 1.50. The most popular rectangular range is 1.20 to 1.30, which produces a softly elongated outline that flatters the finger. Above 1.40 the radiant reads as significantly elongated. There is no objectively correct ratio; both square and rectangular silhouettes are valid choices. Our designer walks each client through the preference during consultation.

Does radiant cut hide inclusions better than other shapes?

Yes, significantly. Because radiant features 70 small brilliant cut facets, light scattering across the stone masks inclusions more effectively than step cuts like emerald or asscher, where the open table reveals any imperfection. For clients drawn to a rectangular silhouette but concerned about clarity, radiant cut offers significantly more forgiveness than emerald. That said, VYOR holds the clarity floor at VS1 and above for every shape, so all our radiant cuts face up clean regardless.

Does VYOR offer radiant cut engagement rings in moissanite?

Yes. Every VYOR radiant cut design is available in lab grown diamond or D colour, VVS1 clarity moissanite. D VVS1 is the highest commercially available moissanite grade and the only grade VYOR offers. Radiant cut moissanite is particularly striking because the 70 facet brilliant cut amplifies moissanite's already high fire and dispersion, producing maximum sparkle within a budget conscious choice.

Is radiant cut a good choice for everyday wear?

Yes. Radiant cut is one of the most durable diamond shapes for everyday wear because the cropped corners protect the most vulnerable points of the stone. Unlike princess (with sharp corners that can chip if struck), radiant's cropped corners are inherently protected by their geometry. Combined with full brilliant cut faceting and the option of bezel or V claw settings, radiant cut delivers a combination of durability, light return, and modern aesthetic that makes it particularly well suited to active lifestyles.

The radiant cut is the youngest of the major diamond cuts and one of the most technically refined. At VYOR, every radiant cut engagement ring is designed in Perth, set with a GIA or IGI certified lab grown diamond personally reviewed by our gemologist, or with D VVS1 moissanite, and finished in Western Australia by our team of senior master jewellers.

Custom Radiant Cut Engagement Rings at VYOR

Radiant cut is the engagement ring shape that combines emerald cut geometry with round brilliant fire. By delivering 70 facets within a rectangular or square silhouette with protective cropped corners, the radiant produces a stone that is simultaneously architectural and brilliant, durable and luminous. It is the choice of clients who want the contemporary geometric outline of emerald cut without sacrificing the high sparkle of brilliant cut.

Every signature design in our radiant collection is available in lab grown diamond or D VVS1 moissanite, in square or rectangular silhouettes, and in 18k white gold, yellow gold, rose gold, or platinum. If your vision sits outside the existing collection, our design team creates custom radiant cut engagement rings from scratch alongside you, with the same three to five week delivery timeframe.

Curated by Our Gemologist, Designed by Our Designer

Every VYOR consultation is led personally by the founders. Our gemologist, Joseph, reviews every shortlisted radiant cut diamond himself. For radiant specifically, this means examining the corner geometry under the loupe, confirming the 70 facets are cleanly cut and symmetrically arranged, evaluating the depth percentage against face up size, and verifying the stone produces clean fire across the table and corners under daylight conditions.

Our designer, Nikolett, directs every setting decision and every aesthetic choice in the studio. For radiant, she works with you on the square versus rectangular orientation, the length to width ratio, the setting style (solitaire, hidden halo, three stone with trapezoid sides, bezel), and the relationship between the stone's cropped corners and the prong or bezel arrangement. The right setting for a radiant balances its geometric outline with the warmth of its brilliant cut light.

How to Choose a Radiant Cut Diamond, A Gemologist's Guide

Radiant is one of the most versatile and rewarding shapes to buy well. Five things our gemologist looks at on every radiant at VYOR.

Length to width ratio

The first choice is square radiant (1.00 to 1.05) or rectangular radiant (1.10 to 1.50). Square reads more compact and classical. Rectangular reads more elongated and contemporary, with 1.20 to 1.30 producing the most popular balanced silhouette. The ratio decision is made before stone selection begins.

Corner symmetry

The four cropped corners must be cut to equal angles and equal lengths for visual balance. Asymmetric corners produce an unbalanced face up appearance that is visible to the naked eye even on otherwise high grade stones. We review corner symmetry under the loupe on every shortlisted stone before presenting.

Depth and table proportions

A well cut radiant sits at 60% to 70% depth and 60% to 70% table. Above 73% depth the stone hides weight inside the ring rather than spreading face up. Outside the optimal table range, the stone can lose either fire or brightness. The certificate lists both percentages clearly.

Cut performance

GIA and IGI do not issue an overall cut grade for radiant (only round brilliant has true cut grading). Our gemologist examines each stone for cut performance under daylight, including light return through the table, fire across the crown facets, and scintillation when the stone is moved. Stones that grade well on paper but underperform in daylight are not presented to clients.

Colour and clarity, the VYOR standard

VYOR works with D, E, F, and G colour exclusively for radiant, and VS1 clarity and above. Radiant is more forgiving on colour and clarity than step cuts because brilliant cut faceting masks subtle imperfections, but we still hold the VYOR floor at the same standard as every other shape to ensure consistent quality across our collection.

These are the five factors our gemologist walks through in every consultation.

The VYOR Process

[Same four stage process: Consultation, Design, Crafting, Delivery, as in all other pages]

Consultation

A private 45 minute session at our Wembley showroom in Perth, or a 30 minute secure video call for clients anywhere in Australia. You meet both founders. Our gemologist walks through stone options and the criteria specific to radiant. Our designer discusses ratio, setting direction, and aesthetic choices. Together the founders present a curated shortlist of certified stones in your carat and budget range.

Design

Once your stone and setting direction are confirmed, our design team produces a detailed 3D CAD model of your ring. You review and approve every element before crafting begins.
