Can a Jeweller Tell the Difference? The Truth About Detection
It is one of the most common questions I hear in my Wembley showroom: "If I wear a lab-grown diamond, will people—or even other jewellers—be able to tell?"
As a gemologist, I can give you the short answer: To the naked eye, it is impossible to tell. Even with a standard jeweller’s loupe, most professionals cannot distinguish a high-quality lab diamond from a mined one.
Here is the breakdown of how detection actually works in 2026.
The Naked Eye vs. The Loupe
Lab-grown diamonds are chemically and physically identical to mined diamonds. They have the same refractive index (sparkle) and the same hardness. Whether you are at a dinner party or showing your ring to a friend, there is no visual "tell."
Even when using a 10x magnification loupe—the standard tool for any jeweller—a lab-grown diamond looks exactly like a natural stone. It will have similar inclusions and the same crisp facet edges.
How We Actually Tell: Laser Inscriptions
The primary way a professional identifies a lab diamond is by looking for a laser inscription on the girdle (the outer edge) of the stone.
Most reputable lab diamonds, including those we feature in our engagement ring collection, are laser-inscribed with a report number and the words "Lab Grown." These letters are microscopic and can only be seen under high magnification. This is a measure of transparency and ethics that we fully support at Diamond Lab.
Specialized Lab Equipment
To identify a stone without an inscription, a gemologist must use advanced machinery. These devices test for "Type IIa" nitrogen levels—a rare trait in natural diamonds but common in lab-grown ones—or use UV light to look at growth patterns. These are not tools the average person (or even every retail jeweller) has sitting on their desk.
Confidence in Your Choice
The reality is that a lab-grown diamond is a "real" diamond. When you choose a custom jewellery design from us, you are getting a stone that holds its beauty forever.
If you are proud of the ethical and sustainable choice you’ve made, you can share it! But if you prefer to keep it private, rest assured that your ring looks every bit the luxury masterpiece it is.

We invite you to book a consultation to see our stones side-by-side. Our goal is to ensure you feel 100% confident in your selection. You can also explore our ready-to-ship engagement rings to see the incredible quality we offer.
