Everything you need to know about three-stone engagement rings

Three-Stone FAQ

What is a trilogy engagement ring?

A trilogy engagement ring (also called a three stone engagement ring) features a centre stone flanked by two side stones, producing a balanced three stone arrangement across the top of the ring. The side stones are typically smaller than the centre stone (commonly between one quarter and one third the size) and can be the same shape as the centre or a complementary shape such as pears, trapezoids, half moons, or tapered baguettes. Trilogy is one of the oldest and most enduring engagement ring styles, with examples dating back to ancient Roman jewellery, and remains one of the most popular categories at VYOR today.

What is the symbolic meaning of a three stone engagement ring?

The traditional symbolism of a trilogy engagement ring is past, present, and future. The three stones represent the journey of the relationship: the past you've shared, the present moment of commitment, and the future you'll build together. The symbolism has made trilogy a particularly meaningful choice for proposals that mark a significant milestone, vow renewals, or anniversaries. The meaning is not required to choose a trilogy, but for many clients it adds an additional layer of significance to the ring itself.

What side stone shapes work best with each centre stone?

The classic trilogy pairings have developed over decades of fine jewellery design. Round centre stones pair beautifully with round side stones (for symmetry) or tapered baguette side stones (for an Art Deco look). Oval centres pair classically with pear side stones (the curves complement each other), and increasingly with trapezoid or half moon side stones for a modern silhouette. Cushion and elongated cushion centres pair with half moon or trapezoid side stones. Emerald and asscher centres are most commonly paired with tapered baguettes for an Art Deco arrangement. Princess and radiant centres pair with trapezoid side stones for a fully geometric look.

How large should the side stones be compared to the centre stone?

The classic side stone proportion is between one quarter and one third the carat weight of the centre stone. A 2 carat centre stone is typically paired with two 0.40 to 0.65 carat side stones. Smaller side stones (one fifth or less of the centre) read as more delicate accents. Larger side stones (approaching one half the centre) read as a more dramatic, statement trilogy. Our designer walks each client through the proportion that suits the overall design direction during consultation.

Are trilogy rings more expensive than solitaires?

Generally yes, because three stones cost more than one. However, the price difference is smaller than many clients expect. Side stones in a typical trilogy add roughly 30 to 60% to the total stone cost compared to a solitaire with the same centre. The setting itself is also more complex, adding modestly to the manufacturing cost. For a trilogy with all VYOR standard quality stones (D, E, F, G colour and VS1 and above for diamonds, or D VVS1 moissanite), the total ring price reflects the additional gemological content while remaining accessible.

Can I customise the side stones in a VYOR trilogy?

Yes. Every VYOR trilogy can be customised across multiple dimensions: side stone shape (round, pear, trapezoid, half moon, tapered baguette, oval), side stone size proportion, side stone metal (set in the same metal as the centre, or in a contrasting two tone arrangement), and side stone setting style (claw or bezel). Our designer creates custom trilogy combinations for clients whose vision is not represented in the existing signature collection, with the same three to five week delivery timeframe.

What is the most popular trilogy combination?

The current most popular VYOR trilogy is oval centre with pear side stones, typically in white gold or platinum. This combination has become particularly visible following several high profile celebrity engagements, and it suits a wide range of clients because the rounded curves of pear side stones complement the oval centre softly without competing for visual attention. Following that, round centre with round side stones remains the timeless classic, and emerald centre with tapered baguette side stones is the most popular Art Deco inflected option.

Does VYOR offer trilogy engagement rings in moissanite?

Yes. Every VYOR trilogy design is available with all three stones in lab grown diamond, all three in D colour VVS1 clarity moissanite, or a combination such as lab grown diamond centre with moissanite side stones (or vice versa). D VVS1 is the highest commercially available moissanite grade and the only grade VYOR offers. The combination option is particularly popular for clients seeking a larger centre stone within budget while preserving the gemological quality of the side stones.

The trilogy is one of the oldest engagement ring styles in continuous use and one of the most personally meaningful. At VYOR, every trilogy engagement ring is designed in Perth, set with GIA or IGI certified lab grown diamonds personally reviewed by our gemologist, or with D VVS1 moissanite, and finished in Western Australia by our team of senior master jewellers.

Custom Trilogy Engagement Rings at VYOR

Trilogy is the engagement ring style of intentional symbolism. Three stones representing past, present, and future, arranged across the top of the ring in a balanced composition that has been refined through centuries of fine jewellery design. The trilogy produces more visual presence than a solitaire of equivalent centre stone size, and carries a layer of personal meaning that solitaires and halos do not.

Every signature trilogy design in our collection is available in lab grown diamond or D VVS1 moissanite, in any centre stone shape, with multiple side stone shape and size options, and in 18k white gold, yellow gold, rose gold, or platinum. If your vision sits outside the existing collection, our design team creates custom trilogy engagement rings from scratch alongside you, with the same three to five week delivery timeframe.

Curated by Our Gemologist, Designed by Our Designer

Every VYOR consultation is led personally by the founders. Our gemologist, Joseph, reviews every certified diamond destined for a trilogy setting personally, including all three stones for fully matched trilogy designs. Side stones receive the same VYOR quality floor as the centre stone (D, E, F, or G colour and VS1 clarity and above), with particular attention to colour matching across the three stones so the trilogy reads as a unified composition rather than three separately graded stones.

Our designer, Nikolett, directs every trilogy design decision in the studio. She works with you on the centre stone shape, the side stone shape pairing, the size proportion between centre and side stones, the setting style for the side stones (claw or bezel), the band integration, and the metal choice. The right trilogy is one where the three stones work together as a single statement rather than competing for attention.

How to Choose a Trilogy Engagement Ring, A Designer's Guide

Trilogy design involves more decisions than solitaire or halo, because each side stone is itself a design element. Five things our designer walks through on every trilogy consultation at VYOR.

Centre stone shape

The centre stone establishes the visual language of the entire ring. Round and oval centres are the most flexible, pairing beautifully with a wide range of side stone shapes. Emerald and asscher centres are most classically paired with tapered baguettes (Art Deco). Princess, radiant, cushion, pear, and marquise centres each suggest specific side stone pairings that have developed over decades of trilogy design.

Side stone shape

The side stone shape determines whether the trilogy reads as classical, contemporary, or romantic. Round side stones read most traditional. Pear side stones (curved tips pointing toward the centre) read most contemporary and are currently the most popular pairing for oval centres. Trapezoid and half moon side stones read most modern and architectural. Tapered baguette side stones read most Art Deco and are the heritage pairing for step cut centres.

Size proportion

The classic ratio is side stones at one quarter to one third the carat weight of the centre. Smaller proportions (one fifth or less) read as delicate accents. Larger proportions (approaching one half) read as statement trilogies with significant visual weight. The proportion decision affects total carat weight, price, and the overall character of the ring.

Side stone setting style

Side stones can be claw set (most common, with two or three small prongs holding each stone) or bezel set (with a small metal rim around each stone). Claw set side stones read more traditional and allow more light into the side stones. Bezel set side stones read more modern and offer greater stone protection. The setting style should match or complement the centre stone setting for visual coherence.

Band and metal

Trilogy bands are typically plain (to keep visual focus on the three stones) or feature subtle pavé. Wider bands hold their own against larger trilogy compositions; thinner bands favour more delicate proportions. White metals (platinum, white gold) produce a contemporary frame around any centre and side stone shape. Yellow and rose gold produce warmer, more classical or romantic effects.

These are the five decisions our designer walks through in every consultation. Trilogy is the most personal of the major engagement ring styles and rewards careful design choice at every level.

The VYOR Process

Every VYOR custom engagement ring follows the same four stage process.

Consultation

A private 45 minute session at our Wembley showroom in Perth, or a 30 minute secure video call for clients anywhere in Australia. You meet both founders. Our gemologist walks through stone options for both centre and side stones, with attention to colour matching across the three. Our designer discusses centre stone shape, side stone pairing, proportion, and aesthetic direction. Together the founders present a curated shortlist of certified stones in your carat and budget range.

Design

Once your stones and setting direction are confirmed, our design team produces a detailed 3D CAD model of your ring. You review and approve every element (centre and side stone setting style, claw configuration, band width, finish, metal) before crafting begins.

Crafting

Your ring is finished in Perth by our team of senior master jewellers, using 100% recycled gold or platinum. Most custom trilogy engagement rings are completed within three to five weeks of design approval, faster than the Australian industry standard of six to eight weeks.
