In nature, diamonds form over billions of years, often trapping tiny bits of other minerals inside. We call these "inclusions." In the lab, a similar process happens. Because lab diamonds grow in a matter of weeks, they develop their own unique internal characteristics, which we call growth remnants.
As a gemologist, I study these remnants at our Wembley showroom to ensure every stone we select for Diamond Lab has a "crisp" crystal structure and maximum light performance.
HPHT Remnants: The Metallic Connection
As we’ve discussed, HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature) diamonds grow in a molten metal flux. Sometimes, microscopic droplets of this metal like iron, nickel, or cobalt can become trapped inside the diamond.
-
What they look like: Under a loupe, these can appear as tiny, dark, metallic-looking points.
-
The "Luster" Benefit: Interestingly, HPHT stones often have a very "hard" and natural crystal luster. At Diamond Lab, we hand-select HPHT stones that offer a very crisp and natural shine, ensuring these tiny remnants don't interfere with the stone's brilliance.
CVD Remnants: Carbon and Strain
CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) diamonds grow layer by layer from carbon-rich gas. Their remnants are different.
-
What they look like: You might see tiny "pinpoints" of non-diamond carbon (graphite) or subtle "strain lines" (internal graining) from the rapid growth process.
-
The "Cloudy" Trap: If a CVD stone grows too quickly, it can look "hazy" or "milky." This is why we vet every stone in our ready-to-ship collection to guarantee total transparency and "eye-clean" clarity.
Why "Eye-Clean" is the Goal
For most engagement rings, the goal isn't necessarily "Flawless" (which carries a heavy premium) but "Eye-Clean." This means that while a gemologist can see the growth remnants under 10x magnification, they are completely invisible to you and your partner’s naked eye.
A Gemologist’s Hand-Selection
The difference between a "good" lab diamond and a "spectacular" one often comes down to these internal details. When you work with us on a custom jewellery design, I personally inspect the stone's "cloudiness" and "tint" to ensure it reflects light perfectly.
See the Detail for Yourself
We believe in total transparency. When you book a consultation with us, we’ll get the loupe out and show you exactly what’s inside your diamond. It’s part of the journey of owning a piece of modern, sustainable luxury.
