At VYOR Diamond Lab, we often tell our clients that while Nature (or science) provides the diamond, the Cutter provides the beauty.

You can have a diamond with the highest colour and clarity, but if the cut is poor, the stone will look dull and lifeless. As a gemologist, I consider the Cut to be the most critical of the 4Cs. It is the engine that drives the light.

What Does "Cut" Actually Mean?

Many people confuse "Cut" with "Shape" (like Oval, Pear, or Round). In gemology, Cut refers to how well a diamond’s facets interact with light. This includes:

  • Proportions: The angles and depths of the facets.

  • Symmetry: How precisely the facets align.

  • Polish: The smoothness of the diamond's surface.

The Science of Light Return

When a diamond is cut to "Ideal" or "Excellent" proportions, light enters through the top (the table), reflects off the internal facets, and is sent back to your eye as a burst of Brilliance (white light) and Fire (rainbow flashes).

  • Too Shallow: Light "leaks" out the bottom, making the diamond look watery.

  • Too Deep: Light "leaks" out the sides, making the centre of the diamond look dark or "nail-headed."

The VYOR Standard: Hand-Selected for "Fire"

At VYOR Diamond Lab, we don't just look at the grade on a certificate. We physically inspect every stone for its "light return." We prioritize stones that exhibit a "hard" diamond luster—a crisp, intense sparkle that performs even in low-light environments.

Whether you are browsing our ready-to-ship engagement rings or looking for a loose stone for a custom jewellery design, we ensure the cut is optimized for maximum impact.

Shape Matters: The "Ideal" Cut for Every Style

Every shape has its own "Ideal" proportions. For example:

  • Round Brilliants: These are the only shapes with a formal "Cut Grade" from labs like IGI or GIA.

  • Fancy Shapes (Oval, Pear, Radiant): These require a gemologist’s eye to ensure they don't have "dark spots" or poor symmetry.

Experience the Sparkle in Wembley

The best way to understand "Cut" is to see it in action. We invite you to book a consultation at our Perth showroom to compare different cut qualities side-by-side.
